Azerbaijani Boy Hangs Himself

Tuesday January 16, 2007 1:01 AM

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) – An 8-year-old boy in Azerbaijan hanged himself after watching video of Saddam Hussein’s execution and asking questions about the process, officials and news reports said Monday.

Several boys in countries scattered around the world – including the United States, Yemen and Turkey – have reportedly hanged themselves after watching televised images of the execution.

Naig Hasanov, a schoolboy in the village of Khatinli, hanged himself on Sunday, district prosecutors in the predominantly Muslim nation in the Caucasus Mountain region.

The boy’s father, Yashar Hasanov, said his son had begun asking numerous questions about hanging after seeing footage from Saddam’s execution, ATV television reported.

Prosecutors in the former Soviet republic have opened an investigation into the boy’s death, but said there were no signs he had been beaten or abused.

Azerbaijan, whose government and political system are secular, is one of the few Muslim nations that have contributed to the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.

I came across this remarkable Story tonight. After reading it I thought: “Well, something like this really should not come as a surprise.”

See. This is one reason I’ve always been against Capital Punishment. The way I look at it, whenever a Society executes a Citizen …. then in essence Society mirrors the conduct of the Murderer and thus Lowers itself DOWN to that animal ‘base’ Level. And as this Story so clearly reveals: Society often forgets the impact Executions have on children. Children who will mature into Adulthood, bringing with them the scars and ‘norms’ of a Societal “Eye for an Eye” mentality.

To be quite honest, I’m STILL somewhat traumatized after watching the Saddam lynching (thank god I didn’t see the decapitation of Saddam’s half-brother). And to think that here we are in the Twenty-first Century ~ yet Humanity still feels the perverse need to KILL to address ‘wrongs’.

God, I hate the Twenty-first Century!!
