Obama raises $25M to rival Clinton camp

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Democrat Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) raked in $25 million for his presidential bid in the first three months of 2007, placing him on a par with front-runner  Hillary Rodham Clinton and dashing her image as the party’s inevitable nominee.

The donations came from an eye-popping 100,000 donors, the campaign said in a statement Wednesday.

The figures were the latest evidence that Obama, a political newcomer who has served just two years in the Senate, has emerged as the most powerful new force in presidential politics this year. It also reinforced his status as a significant threat to Clinton, who’d hoped her own $26 million first quarter fundraising total would begin to squeeze her rivals out of contention.

The campaign reported that the figure included at least $23.5 million that he can spend on the highly competitive primary race. The Clinton campaign has yet to disclose how much they can use for the primary verses money that is designated for the general election.

While Clinton has honed a vast national fundraising network through two Senate campaigns and her husband’s eight years as president, Obama launched his bid for the White House with a relatively small donor base concentrated largely in Illinois, his home state. But his early opposition to the  Iraq war and voter excitement over his quest to be the first black president quickly fueled a powerful fundraising machine.

Since he formally declared his presidential campaign in February, Obama has been traveling the country with a focus on urban areas where he could build his momentum and bring in new donors. He attracted big-money Hollywood and Wall St. executives along with families who came out to his stops in places like Oklahoma that sometimes are neglected by other candidates.

More than half the donors contributed via the Internet for a total of $6.9 million, the campaign said.

“This overwhelming response, in only a few short weeks, shows the hunger for a different kind of politics in this country and a belief at the grassroots level that Barack Obama can bring out the best in America to solve our problems,” said Obama finance chairwoman Penny Pritzker.

Obama has a sense for the Dramatic, don’t he Folks!

Hillary and all the others were rushing to grab the Headlines re how much money they had raised, while Barack held back, and back, and back …. keeping the MEDIA in suspense. And if you’ve noticed ~ while Hillary has been in front of the cameras touting her NEW “I’m tough on Bush” stance, Barack has quietly been attending Town Hall Meetings in Iowa and New Hampshire.

See. Obama is a very, very Brilliant man that Understands the Media and Human Nature. That’s why Hillary is going to have a Fight on her hands if she thinks she can outwit or out-think Obama.

This is GREAT STUFF!!

  1. Obama’s donors have already wasted their $23.5 million if Obama does not QUICKLY distance himself from the anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic MoveOn.org group. Next to MoveOn.org, gaffes like “macaca” become insignificant.

In 2005, MoveOn.org published an official cartoon of Pope Benedict waving a gavel in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. There are plenty of Catholic Democrats in Pennsylvania who will give their votes to someone else once they become aware that Obama’s friends are spewing “the Catholics are taking over America” hate propaganda. MoveOn’s Action Forum, with the full knowledge and approval of its moderators, welcomed hate speech that used “Jew” as an epithet, called Tom Lantos (a Democrat) a “whining, arrogant Jew,” and called for the arrest and imprisonment of the “Catholic Pedophiles of America.” An entire dossier of the MoveOn Action Forum hate speech and 9/11 conspiracy theories–which is available online–requires three or so Web pages to display all of it.

It is very important to note that it is on record that MoveOn.org’s moderators (contrary to MoveOn’s press release of September 2) knew about, welcomed, and tolerated the hate speech while censoring criticism of racists like Al Sharpton and also the hate speech itself.

If Obama does not distance himself from this group quickly, his personal character and his fitness to hold any office (including U.S. Senator) will be open to question. Perhaps his donors should hold off until they see what he is going to do about this problem, rather than wasting their money on someone whose candidacy will be derailed by connections to a hate organization. $250 million will not be enough to trump Hillary (or more importantly, the Republican candidate) once the country knows that Obama is knowingly and willfully associating himself with what is arguably a hate organization.

It gets even worse; even the anti-war Left has turned on MoveOn.org by accusing it of fabricating a poll and misrepresenting its members’ antiwar views. Cindy Sheehan published the following, which Michael Moore repeated as a “must-read” on his Web site. “A month ago I wrote that MoveOn began efforts to support “slow bleed” while antiwar forces actively opposed it. Recently MoveOn fabricated a biased push-poll in which “85%” of respondents supported “slow bleed”; however, the 96% of the MoveOn members who favor withdrawal, and who were not offered a vote on that option, refused to participate in a sham. Congressional sources report that the spurious MoveOn poll, together with intensive bullying and bribing, was used to erode the principled opposition of congressional progressives.”

If Barack Obama wants to continue to associate himself with a group that apparently fabricates polls while sponsoring anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic hate speech along with 9/11 conspiracy theories, what happens to his candidacy will be entirely his own fault.

It seems to me that your ‘beef’ is with the MOVEOn folk and NOT Barack Obama. As you’re AWARE ~ the Democrats have a BIG TENT that INCLUDES many Groups and Organizations with various Points of View. (unlike the MONOLITHIC Republican Party)

Also as you probably KNOW, Obama has clearly REPUDIATED views, ideas, organizations, and individuals that Support him yet do NOT “Speak” for him or his Campaign.

Nothing that you’ve stated shows a LINK with Obama supporting the allegations that you’ve raised regarding MOVEOn and their alleged anti-Jew or anti-Catholic proclivity:

    So why connect the two?

As I previously stated: you need to bring your ‘beef’ directly to Move On and NOT to the Campaign of Barack Obama.
