“The Apostle Paul”

The above ‘clip’ was from what I believe to be the Greatest Movie re Jesus ever made: “King of Kings” (1961)

Lately I’ve been reading the Book of “Romans” by the Apostle Paul. And in it Paul struggles to clarify the bridge between Judaism and the ‘New Message’ of Jesus. For example, the Jews held that “THE LAW” (Jewish Law) was the portal whereby a ‘Path to God’ could be attained. That LIFE and RIGHTEOUSNESS was attained IN THE LAW. (again, Jewish Law)

Paul, however, says this in Romans 7: 7-8 ….

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay. I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.”

EUREKA!! : )

I’m a very ‘Spiritual’ individual, and for my entire LIFE ‘Organized’ Religion’s insistence on “The LAW must be followed!” or “You MUST obey the Ten Commandments!” seemed to me to be both IMPOSSIBLE and contrary to my Human Nature! In-other-words, as a child and Young Adult I LOVED sex (g), would tell a LIE or two (or three), would be envious of a friend’s girlfriend or car or house, or would want to ‘punch out’ a perceived enemy.

Human Qualities, y’all! : )

So I found myself, in pursuit of all these RELIGIOUS LAWS, perceived myself as constantly being a sinner at WAR with myself! See ~ and as Paul teaches ~ Human Nature is born to SIN! We “ALL” have serious ‘Spiritual Failings’ because it’s our Nature to SIN! Paul says, “Hell! I didn’t even KNOW lusting was a SIN until the LAW brought it to my attention!” : )

Jewish Law! (of which both Paul and Jesus were Jews)

So according to Paul, how can MAN liberate him or herself from BOTH this clinging ‘Sinful Nature’ AND the burdensome Law? Let’s look at Romans 8: 5-17.

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Therefore, breathren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die; but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Ab’ba, Father.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that that we are the children of God:

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.”

Eureka! : )

If “WE” live by our sinful, bodily Natures: “We” die!

If, however, we put aside our misdeeds of the body ~ which BTW can NEVER have its needs satisfied ~ but instead through the Spirit ‘kill off’ this ‘Human Bodily Need’:
WE WILL LIVE through the Spirit and Guidance of God!!

A stunning lecture by Paul!
In the film ‘clip’ watch what Jesus tells the crowd that wants to stone Mary Magdalene. The crowd is relying on what as a justification:

The LAW says …”

Buddhists have a saying:

“Desire nothing … until you want NOTHING!”

Study “Romans” some time. Its GREAT reading.
