The ‘Black Ethos’

Posted by scorpiomkm on April 28, 2009

In my next Entry I display the Song  “I Dreamed A Dream” sung by an accomplished Artist; however, I had no idea that the ‘Lady of Soul’ Aretha Franklin had performed the song before then President Clinton at one of his Inaugural Celebrations!!

What I also wish to point out here is the Black Ethos. You see, in the Song (and from the Musical ‘Les Miserables’) the end of this magnificent Song says, “Life has killed the Dream I Dreamed …”; however Ms. Franklin, in her Black Ethos, proclaims:

“Life WILL NOT KILL my Dream …”

Interesting.

Here’s Aretha Frankin’s rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream”

THE Song In Total

Posted by scorpiomkm on April 28, 2009

Because UTube has ‘silenced’ Susan Boyle’s Performance of  “I Dreamed A Dream” ~ Fame and Celebrity often is a curse <g> ~ I thought you would enjoy hearing the Song in its entirety … sung by another, however.

The Song, from the musical “Les Miserables”, to me is one of the most beautiful I have heard. Anyway, here is “I Dreamed A Dream” :

“I Dreamed A Dream”

What is it about the POWER of the Human Spirit! Draped deep within a body IT KNOWS will one day die; saddled often with great odds and challenges it must overcome; told that often it is worthless, a loser, too poor … too ugly … too young … too old, yet somehow the Human Spirit Fights to stake its claim as God’s Child too.

I’m sure most of you have seen the stunning Performance of Susan Boyle recently. Each time I see that Performance ~ in total ~ I cry with sheer Joy; for Susan is the embodiment of the unconquerable Soul that is within us all.

And isn’t it striking that Susan chose as her Song “I Dreamed a Dream”. Here are the full lyrics of the Song:

There was a time when men were kind,
And their voices were soft,
And their words inviting.
There was a time when love was blind,
And the world was a song,
And the song was exciting.
There was a time when it all went wrong…

I dreamed a dream in time gone by,
When hope was high and life, worth living.
I dreamed that love would never die,
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid,
And dreams were made and used and wasted.
There was no ransom to be paid,
No song unsung, no wine, untasted.

But the tigers come at night,
With their voices soft as thunder,
As they tear your hope apart,
And they turn your dream to shame.

He slept a summer by my side,
He filled my days with endless wonder…
He took my childhood in his stride,
But he was gone when autumn came!

And still I dream he’ll come to me,
That we will live the years together,
But there are dreams that cannot be,
And there are storms we cannot weather!

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living,
So different now from what it seemed…
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed…

Truly a Remarkable Performance, and an even remarkable Human Spirit!!
